TED, which stands for Technology, Entertainment, Design is now owned by the Sapling Foundation, a non profit organisation set up by Chris Anderson, and produces or inspires conferences across the world. While each conference has its own unique theme, all TED conferences have a goal to foster the spread of great ideas.
One of the most inspiring speeches I have heard from a woman was delivered by author and feminist, Isabel Allende at the TED conference in 2008. A great model for all aspiring women speakers. What we can all learn from this speech is the power of storytelling.
For years I believed that Speaking to a Group of people was the number one human fear – well ahead of fear of death. This belief has been confirmed by countless studies over the years listing public speaking at or near the top of the list of human fears… but the truth is that not many people are afraid of speaking in public.
I don’t know why it is, but no matter how carefully I brief a hotel on the room set-up I want for my seminars, workshops and training meetings, more often than not when I arrive, they have provided a standard hotel room set up. What I find even more alarming is the number of times that I attend a meeting either as a guest speaker or audience member to find that the meeting planner or speaker has not bothered to think beyond this standard room set-up which is often quite hostile to the audience.
